Stefan leads Butler Bros’ strategy and growth, building strong client relationships and driving high standards across the business.

Butler Bros brings together two brothers with different professional backgrounds and a shared determination to build a company people can depend on.

Butler Bros brings together two brothers with different professional backgrounds and a shared determination to build a company people can depend on. Before the business began, Mark Butler spent 25 years working in the drainage and civils industry, including with some of the sector’s national leaders. Working his way up from second-man roles to operations management, Mark gained experience at every level of delivery. That journey shaped his practical understanding of the work, the challenges facing site teams and what it takes to keep operations running effectively.
Stefan Butler brought a different perspective. Before stepping into Butler Bros, he spent 10 years working as a health and safety consultant and business advisor for some of the world’s largest construction, wind energy and utility companies. His experience developed across complex working environments, helping businesses manage risk, strengthen their operations and support their people.
From our base in Stockton-on-Tees, we support domestic customers, housing providers, local authorities, principal contractors, utilities partners and industrial sites. Our core region is Teesside and the North East, with planned project capacity across the UK.
As Operations Director, Mark brings hands-on technical knowledge, operational leadership and an understanding of what successful delivery requires on the ground. As Managing Director, Stefan brings experience in business development, management systems and health and safety, helping shape the company’s direction and the structure behind its growth.
Our strengths complement each other.
We approach challenges from different angles, challenge each other’s thinking and bring together practical experience with a clear view of where the business needs to go.
Together, we founded Butler Bros in December 2020 with a shared ambition: to build a contractor that combines the standards and capability expected of a larger organisation with the personal commitment of a family business.
That ambition continues to drive us today. As Butler Bros grows, we remain focused on developing our people, earning our customers’ trust and building a company we are proud to put our name to.
Different backgrounds. Shared standards. The same name above the door.
Since our incorporation in December 2020, we have grown into a recognised drainage, civils and environmental services contractor, investing in our people, equipment and working practices as our capabilities have developed.
Our story is about more than business growth. It is about the people who have joined us, the customers who have placed their trust in us and the standards we continue to set for ourselves.
Starting with one van, a jetting unit and a camera, we combined practical industry experience with the determination to build something of our own. Our aim was straightforward: provide a dependable service, take pride in our work and give customers a reason to call us again.
From our base in Teesside, those early jobs laid the foundations for the business we are today.

Our first full year was about getting established and earning our customers’ trust.
We focused on drainage work, tackling problems with a hands-on approach and a commitment to seeing each job through. Every enquiry was an opportunity to build a relationship, and every completed job helped establish the Butler Bros name.
We developed our first marketing plan and introduced the black and green branding that would become part of our identity.
Recommendations, repeat business and new enquiries began to grow our customer base, giving us the confidence to keep investing in the company.
In February 2021, we secured our first long-term framework agreement with a local housing association, helping us develop both financially and operationally in our early years.
As more customers came to know Butler Bros, opportunities began to extend beyond individual callouts into regular work and ongoing customer relationships.
We worked to expand our commercial customer base and develop relationships with contractors who needed reliable drainage support.
Alongside this, we continued investing in tools and equipment to take on a wider range of jobs.
This was an important stage in our development: building the capacity to support customers consistently while maintaining the personal service that had helped us get started.

With the business becoming more established, our focus turned to supporting a broader range of work.
New customer relationships and repeat instructions created opportunities to take on larger jobs and provide more support with drainage investigations, repairs and associated groundworks.
As our workload developed, we began strengthening the team and putting more structure around how work was organised. We wanted growth to be supported by the right people, equipment and preparation.
Towards the end of 2023, we faced a choice: remain a small, hands-on business or invest in the people, premises and equipment needed to grow.
We chose to go for it.

Signing the lease on our first premises in December 2023 was a proud moment for Butler Bros.
Having a dedicated base gave us space to organise equipment, support day-to-day operations and plan for the next stage of the business. It was a significant commitment and a tangible sign of how far we had come since starting out three years earlier.
For Stefan, Mark and the team, it marked the beginning of a new chapter: a growing business with a place to build its future. By the end of 2023, the team had grown from around four people to seven.
Fleet count: 4 · Team: 7 people
With our first premises secured, 2024 was about making the most of that foundation.
We continued developing customer relationships, pursuing new contracts and strengthening our ability to support regular commercial work alongside reactive drainage enquiries.
Further investment in vehicles, tools and equipment helped us build capacity, while our growing experience in repairs, excavation and reinstatement supported the development of our civils offering.
Our aim was to give customers access to a broader service through a team they already knew and trusted.
During 2024, we pursued larger contracts and framework opportunities with the potential to shape the next three to five years of the business. We secured two of these opportunities, creating a stronger foundation for further growth.
Fleet count: 5 · Team: 8 people
As the business progressed, we placed greater emphasis on becoming a dependable working partner for customers and other contractors.
Alongside winning new work, we focused on the things that help relationships last: clear communication, reliable attendance, practical solutions and taking ownership when challenges arise.
Developing these partnerships helped create a stronger platform for repeat work and future opportunities, while giving us a clearer understanding of what our customers needed from Butler Bros.
In December 2024, we secured a contract with a major construction company in the North of England. As we prepared to meet the growing workload, our team expanded to around 11 people.
Fleet count: 7 · Team: 11 people
To meet growing demand during 2025, we welcomed new colleagues across our site and office teams, strengthening the people behind our service.
As our operations developed, so did the need for effective planning, administration and customer support. Building these functions helped us coordinate work and provide better support to the teams delivering it.
We also invested in an apprenticeship, creating an opportunity for someone to develop their skills and build a career alongside the business.
In September 2025, we secured a 5 year framework with North Yorkshire Highways, resulting in another growth phase which included hiring more staff and purchasing extra fleet to support the new operations.
With a broader team, an established operational base and expanding drainage and civils capabilities, our attention increasingly turned to the systems and standards needed to support our next stage of growth.
We worked on strengthening our processes, training and management arrangements, laying the groundwork for the certification and specialist equipment milestones that would follow in 2026.
Our ambition was growing, but the principle behind it remained the same: build a business that customers can rely on and our people can be proud to work for.
Our expanding drainage and civils capabilities meant we could support more stages of a project, from investigating a problem to completing repairs and reinstatement.
Fleet count: 11 · Team: 16 people
We celebrated achieving certification to three internationally recognised management standards:
• ISO 9001 — Quality management.
• ISO 14001 — Environmental management.
• ISO 45001 — Occupational health and safety management.
This was an important milestone in developing the systems behind our work, supporting consistent service, environmental responsibility and the health and safety of our people.
These standards provide a foundation for continual improvement as the business grows.

This provided us the opportunity to purchase our first HGV, in the form of a Jet Vacuum Tanker. This expanded our operational capability within the industry, allowing us to serve a broader customer base with higher capacity cleaning and waste removal.
Achieving Constructionline Gold verification was another proud moment for Butler Bros.
It reflected the work of our operations and administration teams in developing and maintaining the evidence, processes and standards required to support our customers.
For a growing contractor, this was an important step in demonstrating our readiness for further supply chain opportunities.
Today, Butler Bros brings together drainage, civils and environmental services under a family-led business with a growing team and specialist equipment.
Led by Stefan Butler, Managing Director, and Mark Butler, Operations Director, our business combines practical site experience with dedicated operations, contracts, planning, business support and accounts functions.
From reactive drainage problems to planned repairs and civils projects, our purpose remains clear: adding value, providing support and making a difference for all.
We are proud of how far we have come and grateful to the employees, customers, suppliers and partners who have helped us get here.
Fleet count: 12 · Team: 20 people
